SolidWorks 2007 Release Notes

Technical Alerts

• Third-party add-ins built with MFC 4.2 are not compatible with SolidWorks 2008 and cannot be added in using Tools, Add-Ins, or File, Open *.dll. Check with the add-in vendor for compatibility information. These add-ins are compatible with SolidWorks 2007.

• SolidWorks 2007 is the last release to support CD installation media. Future releases will be available on DVD only.

• You may need to upgrade to a newer version of Adobe® Reader® to view What's New. Click here.

• Using compression programs that delete SolidWorks model file structured storage objects is not supported and can result in file corruption. Using programs like WinZip® or PKZIP that do not delete SolidWorks data is supported, although backing up files before compression is recommended.

• If you are using PDMWorks Workgroup 2006 Service Pack 4.0, you may need to upgrade to Service Pack 4.2 before installing PDMWorks Workgroup 2007. Click here.

• You may need to disable McAfee® anti-virus software before installing a SolidWorks service pack. Click here.

System Requirements

To ensure successful installation and optimum performance, verify that your system complies with the requirements specified in www.solidworks.com/System_Requirements.

Windows 2000 Support

SolidWorks 2007 is no longer available for Microsoft Windows 2000 operating system. Installation on Windows 2000 computers is blocked. Windows 2000 users must upgrade to an operating system recommended in www.solidworks.com/System_Requirements.

Windows XP Service Pack 2

SolidWorks 2007 supports Windows® XP Service Pack 2, which includes the Windows Firewall. The firewall requires modifications to products that use the TCP/IP protocol for inbound and outbound communications:

• PDMWorks Workgroup: If you install PDMWorks Workgroup on a Windows XP system with Service Pack 2 or a Windows 2003 server system with Service Pack 1, you must enable ports in the XP firewall.

• SolidNetWork License: If you install SolidNetWork License (SNL) on Windows XP Service Pack 2, you must modify ports on the license server and modify the license file.

• If you use additional Internet firewall software, you must add the two ports to your firewall exceptions list.

Installation

• SolidWorks 2007 is available on DVD as well as CD media; the DVD includes both the x32 and the x64 versions of SolidWorks software. (The x64 Edition is available only on the DVD.)

If you are later asked to insert the source media when applying a patch, you will need the same type of media that you used for the installation (CD or DVD).

• The Microsoft .NET FrameWork 2.0 environment is installed in the SolidWorks installation.

• The installation adds the following files to your system folder (%systemroot%system32):

• PDMWorks Workgroup Upgrades

• When you retrieve 'as built' assemblies and drawings in Release 2006 Service Pack 4.0 with 'working copy' revision level enabled, some components will have revision levels newer than the revisions used to create them.

• PDMWorks Workgroup 2007 handles revision levels correctly but does not repair vaults from Release 2006 Service Pack 4.0. To repair 2006 vaults, upgrade to PDMWorks 2006 Service Pack 4.2 before installing PDMWorks Workgroup 2007.

• If you downloaded and installed PDMWorks with SolidWorks 2006 SP4.1, you are running PDMWorks 2006 Service Pack 4.0; there was no Service Pack 4.1 for PDMWorks.

• You cannot add the PDMWorks Workgroup 2008 Add-In to SolidWorks 2007.

PDF Support

Portable document format (PDF) support in SolidWorks is provided by Adobe Systems. The Save as file typeis called Adobe Portable Document Format (*.pdf) rather than PDF (*.pdf).

To save a document that includes non-English characters as a PDF, the Arial Unicode MS font must be installed on your system.

To install the Arial Unicode MS font:

1. Exit all programs.

2. In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs and do one:

• If you installed your Microsoft Office program as part of an Office package, click Microsoft Office in the Currently installed programs box, then Change.

• If you installed your Office program individually, click the name of your program in the Currently installed programs box, then Change.

3. In the Microsoft Office Setup dialog, click Add or Remove Features, then Next.

4. Select Choose advance customization of applications, then Next.

5. Next to Office Shared Features, click the plus sign (+).

6. Next to International Support, click the plus sign (+).

7. Click the icon next to Universal Font and install it on your local hard drive.

MoldflowXpress

SolidWorks 2007 is the last release to include MoldflowXpress. In SolidWorks 2008 this functionality will no longer be available.

Licensing

SolidWorks applications (including add-in products) are licensed in these ways:

• Activation: SolidWorks and COSMOS single user (standalone) licenses require a serial number during installation, which is then activated when the application is first used.

• Network Licensing: A serial number is entered during the SolidWorks client installation, and the license is managed by a network license server.

To install PDMWorks Workgroup, you need to enter a PDMWorks Workgroup Contributor license key unless you have SolidWorks Office Professional or SolidWorks Office Premium installed.

x64 Edition

The following are not supported on x64 Edition installations:

• MoldFlowXpress

• 3D Meeting

• Save as Viewpoint

• 2D Emulator

• Rhino® file export

Documentation

• You must have Adobe Reader 7.0.7 installed to view the 3D images and video animations in the What's New PDF manual. You can download the latest version from www.adobe.com.

• COSMOSMotionTM documentation is available only in English and French in SolidWorks 2007.

• PDMWorks Workgroup: The What’s New book says that the PDMWorks Workgroup online help is installed at <install_dir>langenglish. The correct path is <install_dir><PDMWorks_Workgroup_product>langenglish.

Active Directory Installation of SolidWorks 2007 x64

Installation of SolidWorks 2007 x64 through an Active Directory policy does not start unless you have pre-installed the necessary Visual C++ modules. For more information, refer to Knowledge Base solution S-015731.

Toolbox

To add existing toolbox users to a shared environment, click Options (Standard toolbar), HoleWizard/Toolbox and browse to c:solidworks data. This replaces editing the toolbox.ini file.

Hole Wizard

The new Reset button in the Feature Properties dialog box resets the Hole Wizard feature to its default name in the FeatureManager design tree.

Assemblies

Mates

In System Options - Assemblies, you can select a new option, Prompt before changing mate alignments on edit. When changes that you make to mates result in errors that the software can fix by flipping mate alignments, the software asks if you want it to make the changes. Otherwise, the software makes the changes automatically.

Windows Vista™ Implementation

• Service Pack 4.0 is a pre-release version of the x32 version of SolidWorks 2007 on Microsoft Vista Business and Ultimate operating system versions. The x64 version of Vista is not currently supported.

• If you have the Pre-Release 1 version of SolidWorks products installed, you need to uninstall them before installing the Pre-Release 2 version.

ScanTo3D

ScanTo3D does not support *.xml files.

Import/Export

• The Merge Entities option (for import of surface/solid entities in Inventor Part, SAT, STEP, or IGES files) preserves split lines (redundant geometry) and forms a solid when Knit surface(s) or Do not knit is selected.

• The ACIS translator supports SAT version R16.

Windows Desktop Search

If Windows Desktop Search 3.0 is installed on your computer, SolidWorks Search will not work after you upgrade to Service Pack 3.0 (which is based on an earlier version of Desktop Search).

To enable SolidWorks Search with Windows Desktop Search 3.0:

1. Copy the file C:Program Filessolidworksdataxmlschemasolidworksproperties.propdesc to C:Program filesCommonFilesSolidWorks Shared.

2. In the Windows Run dialog box, enter cmd and click OK.

3. At the prompt, enter C:Windowssystem32regsvr32.exe 'C:Program FilesCommon FilesSolidWorks Sharedsldsearchifilter.dll'.

4. Rebuild the search index:

1. Click the magnifying glass icon in the status bar and select Windows Desktop Search Options.

2. Click Advanced.

3. Click Rebuild.

Windows Vista™ Implementation

Service Pack 3.0 is a pre-release version of the x32 version of SolidWorks 2007 on Microsoft Vista Business and Ultimate operating system versions. The x64 version of Vista is not currently supported.

Our software library provides a free download of Auto Typer 4.0 for Mac. The unique ID for this application's bundle is MurGaa.Auto-Typer. This free Mac app is a product of MurGaa. The software lies within System Tools, more precisely General. The Second Auto Typer for Mac allows you to Automate Typing of Multiple Text Sentences on the press of a Configurable System Wide Shortcut Key. Once you download this free auto clicker and typer, start the application to view the menu. In the menu you'll find both the clicker and the typer programs. Installation

To upgrade a SolidWorks standalone installation from Windows XP to Windows Vista:

1. Back up SolidWorks and other application data.

2. Un-install SolidWorks.

3. Refer to the Windows Vista Migration Step-by-Step Guide to upgrade your operating system.

4. Install the Vista version of SolidWorks.

In the Destination Folders dialog box, make sure the Install SolidWorks 2007 common data to box contains the correct shared folder that you used in the previous version of the XP installation of the SolidWorks software.

Graphics Performance

Hardware-accelerated OpenGL drivers are not yet available from graphics vendors such as NVIDIA and ATI. Therefore, graphics performance with SolidWorks running on the Windows Vista operating system is slower than with SolidWorks running on Windows XP. SolidWorks on Vista uses the software-mode OpenGL drivers that are installed with the Microsoft Vista operating system.

SolidWorks will qualify certified hardware OpenGL drivers as they are released from the graphics vendors. Vista supported graphics cards and driver versions will be updated at www.solidworks.com/pages/services/VideoCardTesting.html.

Non-supported Features

The following SolidWorks features and products are not supported for SolidWorks on Vista:

• MoldflowXpress

• MDT translator

• PDMWorks Enterprise

• The SolidNetWork License Manager (SNL)

Although SNL is not supported on a server running Windows Vista, Vista SNL clients are supported on SNL servers with Microsoft Windows XP Professional or Windows Server 2003.

Write Permissions to Design Library Required for Routing Assemblies

To use routing parts from the SolidWorks Design Library in your assemblies, you must have write permission to the <installation folder>/data/design library folder.

PDMWorks Workgroup Viewer

Internet Information Services (IIS) 7.0 is installed with Vista. To install and use PDMWorks Workgroup Viewer, you must configure Vista for IIS 6.0 compatibility.

In Control Panel, set these compatibility options for Internet Information Services:

• IIS 6 Scripting Tools

• IIS 6 WMI Compatibility

• IIS Metabase and IIS 6 Configuration Compatibility

Rhino File Import

• Rhino Version 4.0 is now supported.

• Multibody imports are now supported.

Daylight Savings Time Adjustment

It is recommended that users in North America install Microsoft® hotfix #928388, 2007 time zone update for Microsoft Windows operating systems. The hotfix updates your time zone data to account for the 2007 change in daylight saving time (DST). You can download this hotfix from http://support.microsoft.com/Default.aspx?kbid=928388.

Resolution to File Size Problem

The file size issue documented in Service Pack 1.0 is resolved with the inclusion of a Microsoft hotfix in Service Pack 3.0.

Disabling McAfeeAnti-Virus Software

You must disable McAfee® Anti-Virus software before installing a new service pack. The installation fails when the anti-virus software incorrectly identifies SolidWorks installation files as infected and removes them.

Display

You can now change the direction of the mouse wheel for zooming in and out. Click Tools, Options, View Rotation/Zoom, and select Reverse mouse wheel zoom direction.

Toolbox

A new option, Allow editing of Configuration/File Name, is added to Configure Data on the Settings tab. When cleared, you cannot change the configuration/file name of Toolbox components through the PropertyManager.

Drawings

• An option to clear views, Clear All, has been added to View Palette.

• A new option, Show sheet format dialog on add new sheet, has been added to System Options, Drawings.

• Changing document units now updates the units and value of the Keyboard movement increment option in System Options, Drawings.

Import/Export

• Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire 3.0 files are now supported.

• Import of assembly features is not supported for Pro/ENGINEER files. This statement was incorrectly removed from the SolidWorks 2007 help topic on Pro/ENGINEER files.

Service Pack 2.1 updates the Open Design Alliance™DWGDirect® libraries from version 2.1.0 to 2.1.1

Installation

• Beginning at Service Pack 2.0, only DVD media is included in the installation kit. If you need CDs, request them from your reseller.

• A problem that prevented the 2007 SNL license manager from working on the x64 Edition operating system has been resolved.

• COSMOSFlowWorksTM updates are now full installations rather than patches, increasing the size of the download but improving update reliability.

Detailing

• A new option, Show halo around annotations, is available in Tools, Options, Document Properties, Detailing. When selected, dimensions or annotations that belong to the drawing view are surrounded by a halo of space when they cover an area hatch.

• When you use hole callouts in the JIS standard, you can change the number of instances indicator to '-' or 'x'.

• When you right-click a note and select Bullets and Numbering, you can specify the starting number in the list by setting a Start at value.

Drawings

• A new option, Mark all part/assembly dimension for import into drawings by default, is available in Tools, Options, System Options, Drawings. When selected, any dimension you insert in a model is set as Mark For Drawing. The dimensions are included when inserting model dimensions into drawings.

• A new option, Show view palette, is available in Tools, Options, System Options, Drawings. When selected, the View Palette appears when you click Make Drawing from Part/Assy. When cleared, the Model View PropertyManager appears for you to insert drawing views.

• When you right-click a section view in a drawing, select Isometric Section View to change the view orientation to isometric.

Import Options

When importing STEP, Inventor Part, ACIS, and IGES files, the new Preserve redundant geometry option lets you decide whether you want to keep redundant entities.

SolidWorks File Size

Model file size in SolidWorks 2007 has been reduced. Models with many configurations typically show the largest reduction in size.

Model files from previous releases are smaller after they are first saved. However, because of an issue in the Windows XP operating system, modifying a model returns it to its original SolidWorks 2006 file size.

Check SolidWorks Technical Bulletin http://www.solidworks.com/pages/services/CustomerBulletins.html for the latest status on the availability of the Microsoft hotfix that addresses this problem.

Weldments

In an End Trim operation, you can now choose which side to keep when you use a planar face as the trimming boundary.

Detailing

You can open parts and assemblies from a table-based bill of materials. Right-click a row and select Open <filename>.

Display

In an assembly or part document, you can remove, in a single operation, all color and optical properties:

• Applied at the component level, from all components in the assembly.

• Applied at the entity level, from all entities in the part.

With the top level in the FeatureManager design tree selected, open the Color and Optics PropertyManager and click Remove All Colors.

SolidWorks Content

CTRL+click the icons in the new SolidWorks Content node of the Design Library to download zip files containing the following content:

Localization

SolidWorks 2007 is the first release to support Brazilian Portuguese.

PhotoWorks

• Models can now be illuminated more accurately, especially those that use Global Illumination. To benefit from these improvements, you might need to adjust the lighting applied to models in earlier releases.

• The Daytime scenery option, which uses high dynamic range imaging, is now included in PhotoWorks Studio.

daytime.hdr is added to the background folder you access from the Environment tab in the Scene Editor dialog box. The default scene is not located in the same folder.

Detailing

When you create a numbered list in a note, you can right-click the note and select Bullets and Numbering to set the starting number in the list.

Use of Adobe Acrobat 3D

The capture feature in Adobe® Acrobat® 3D can cause memory problems that affect the performance of large SolidWorks assembly files. (Other products in the Acrobat family do not have this effect.)

If you capture models from SolidWorks or eDrawings using the 3D Capture feature of Adobe Acrobat 3D, the memory problem persists until you remove these applications from the Adobe Acrobat 3D capture list.

To remove applications from the list:

1. Select Edit, Preferences, 3D Capture.

2. Select SolidWorks or eDrawings and click Delete Preset.
